Letting agents should always be alert to notable changes in the field of tenancy, particularly during these times of lockdown. In the past week, there have been two significant announcements that require attention.
One, Robert Jenrick, the Housing Minister, announced that the current ban on evictions, initially due to the end of June, would be extended to the 23rd August 2020. This means that no person can be evicted this summer and that no eviction hearings will get to court till the end of August.
Second, another extension that took place was the ban on tenant fees. Previously, the ban only applied to new tenancies, whereas the new one also covers existing tenancies. Letting agents cannot charge renters for renewing tenancy agreements. What is more, agents should prepare for some refunds, as tenants can legally claim them, if they have paid more than 5 weeks’ rent worth of deposit in the past.
